Our clinic specialises in providing a holistic, integrative approach to addiction treatment that can help with all aspects of the disease. We now offer medication-assisted treatment (M.A.T.) with Suboxone (Buprenorphine/Naloxone) which is a safe and effective way to assist opioid dependent individuals in returning to a normal functioning life.
Understanding Opioid Addiction and Why Treatment Matters
Opioid addiction, sometimes referred to as an epidemic in the US, is nothing new. More than 10 million people misused opioids in the US in 2019 alone, and thousands still die from opioid overdoses every year, in 2019 about 600 000 deaths were attributable to drug use. Close to 80% of these deaths are related to opioids, with about 25% of those deaths caused by opioid overdose. The epidemic feels close to home here in the region of Indiana and in the city of Indianapolis but addiction treatment service are here to help.
Prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and even illicit drugs such as heroin, are opioids. Opioids bind to opioid receptors in the brain and block pain, as well as trigger feelings of pleasure. With time, the brain adapts to the opioids, causing tolerance, dependence and addiction.
Since opioid addiction is so debilitating, treatment, especially medication-assisted treatment (MAT) involving drugs such as Suboxone, with counselling and behaviour therapy, can be a life-saver.
Medication-Assisted Treatment with Suboxone: How It Works
We have an MAT programme with Suboxone (a Buprenorphine-Naloxone combination) at International Family Medicine Urgent Care in which we assist those who are opioid addicts. We utilise this FDA-approved drug to treat opioid addiction as part of their recovery programme to return to a normal life.
The active ingredient in Suboxone is buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist that activates the same opioid receptors in the brain that heroin and prescription opioid painkillers do, but only partially. Buprenorphine can relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing a ‘high’ like full opioid agonists, with the result that patients can return to ‘normal’ life, with fewer physical and psychological roadblocks on the road to recovery.
The other ingredient is naloxone, an opioid antagonist that blocks opioids and prevents misuse. The combination of the two reduces relapse risk by almost 50 per cent, making Suboxone an incredibly effective tool for long-term recovery.
The Benefits of Suboxone Treatment
Our Suboxone treatment programme here at International Family Medicine Urgent Care includes the following advantages to those who want to get free from addiction.
Reduced Craving and Withdrawal: Opioid withdrawal – including even the most intense craving for more opioids – can be extremely painful, and can lead many addicts to feel like recovery is impossible.
Stability: With Suboxone, patients don’t go through the highs and lows with which opioids are commonly associated, and they don’t experience the physical sickness that typically accompanies withdrawal, so they’re more emotionally and physically stable and able to engage more fully in therapy, work or family.
Less risk of overdose: Because it has a ceiling effect on euphoria, if someone on Suboxone does relapse to other opiates, there is less risk of overdose.
Long-Term Support: Suboxone is a long-term treatment and patients can remain on it and continue to recover from the disease with a medical prescription. It can be safely tapered off when the time is right – and it is much safer than abrupt cessation.
A More Manageable Path to Recovery: With the physical symptoms now largely under control, patients can focus on the psychological components of recovery, such as cultivating healthier habits, developing coping skills and addressing any underlying emotional or mental health issues.
